Myanmar restricts importing food products overland

The Ministry of Commerce made an announcement on 12 April 2021 that certain food products will be prohibited from being imported via through border trade as of 1 May 2021. The reason given is that better infrastructure needs to be put in place to be able to safely import and inspect food products, after which trade may recommence.


The restrictions only affect imports of certain food items and only when being imported across land borders, imports by sea and air cargo are not affected. This will primarily affect trade with Thailand and China, both engage in vibrant border trade with Myanmar.


In addition, as of 8 May there is a temporary suspension has been put in place on the import of motorcycles. No end date of this suspension has been provided.
